An interesting experiment tonight. By covering the opening of a lens with a cutout of any shape, you can control the shape of the bokeh (out of focus balls of light) in the background. This is why they often appear to be octagons or pentagons in film, because the lens is stopped down and the aperture blades are controlling the shape of the light.
